Position Summary
The Development Director is the key leader primarily responsible for strategizing, planning and implementing a coordinated fundraising program and the identification and growth of new revenue sources. This includes a strong focus on local and national fundraising efforts including areas such as: corporate partners, individuals, grants and events. The responsibilities include identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors, overseeing community partnerships, building networks and community outreach. The Development Director oversees a staff of two, which also includes responsibility for identifying tactics and overseeing and performing fundraising tasks. The Development Director reports directly to the Executive Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Fundraising
Develop a comprehensive yearly fundraising strategic plan that drives growth year-over-year and includes the engagement of current sources of revenue and develops new sources of revenue; 2023 goal of $2.5+M
Define KPI’s that inform and direct progress and future growth
Ensure compliance with standards for internal donor management.
Execute on developing and stewarding corporate partnerships, annual donor campaigns, and major donor initiatives
Ensure the successful development and execution of annual fundraising events including but not limited to What’s Your Everest, an annual team-based mountain hike for people of all abilities, and the No Barriers Summit, an annual event bringing together people of all backgrounds and abilities for shared experiences
that include adventure, wellness, entertainment, and inspiration.
Create a new event to provide an alternative revenue source and different timing from The Summit and WYE
Collaborate with Marketing and Program staff to ensure successful execution of fundraising strategy
Provide on-the-ground support for fundraising special events including the recruitment of teams and individuals to drive fundraising
Help secure in-kind donations as needed to reduce organizational expenses and enhance the donor experience
Research current trends and opportunities to inform strategy and identify leads
Collaborate with Marketing on the creation of pitch decks and fundamental development materials to deliver on fundraising goals
Create, develop and deliver on a pipeline of grant opportunities
Develop and maintain relationships with donors through regular communication, and provide updates and reports on funded projects
Finance, Technology, Data Management, and Reporting
Successfully forecast, budget and manage revenue and expenses across the Development department, including inter-departmental efforts
Leverage and use all forms of technology designed to reach and engage donors and potential donors including but not limited to online giving, mobile giving, social media, email, and direct mail.
In coordination with the CFO and administrative support staff, ensure the successful management of data entry needs, acknowledgement process, and reporting through the management of online giving platforms
In conjunction with Marketing, co-create strategy for donor communications, including segmented donor lists
Organize and make thank you phone calls and manage thank you mailings, including the engagement of staff and volunteers
Collaborate closely with the CFO on cash flow, forecasting, and financial metrics
Manage and enhance technology platforms to include Salesforce and iContact
Advise Finance staff on the classification of all gifts, including restricted vs. unrestricted
People Leadership
Supervise direct reports on the Development team
Create a high performing team to support an effective culture and exceptional performance
Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
Other Responsibilities
Work effectively across all departments to ensure knowledge and alignment of funding needs and opportunities
Support engagement, stewardship, and recognition of donors from across the organization
Collaborate with the Executive Director on the cultivation of Board and Ambassador fundraising opportunities and give/get requirements; creating opportunities for engagement
Support volunteers to execute annual giving projects including mailings and thank you calls
Lead donor-driven projects utilizing the project management process in collaboration with staff from across the organization
Qualifications:
Knowledge, skills, and abilities-
Ability to develop and drive a successful fundraising strategy with effective executive that results in year-over-year growth
Proven ability to secure 6 and 7-figure gifts from individuals and/or corporate partners
Ability to engage others including local business leaders, volunteers, staff, corporate partners (local and national) and members of the Board of Directors
Strong organizational and administrative skills with astute attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
Enthusiastic approach to the work and a proven desire to work within and across teams
Proven ability to work both independently and as a part of a dynamic and fast-paced team
Proven ability to communicate professionally and effectively both in writing and in person

Education and Experience—
Master’s degree in a field related to public relations, business, events, or nonprofit management preferred; BS/BA degree required
5-10 years of proven professional experience in nonprofit fundraising with a track record of growth
